The Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) chapters across the nation hold an American History Essay Contest each year. These contests are to encourage young people to think creatively about and learn more about our nation's history. Congratulations Anna Huynh-6th, William Crowe-7th, and Olivia Frankovich-8th.
The title of this year's essay is "The Voyage of the Mayflower." This year, 2020, marks the 400th anniversary of the voyage of the Mayflower and founding of the Plymouth Colony. Students were asked to imagine being a passenger on the Mayflower. They had to think about available supplies, two months at sea, and a new life in the wilderness. In their writing, they had to explain if they would have made different choices than the original passengers and give details of their reasoning.
