valentinesdaybussafety Bus Safety on Valentine's Day 2017

To: All Parents and Students attending Worth County Schools

From: Administration of Worth County Schools

Re: Bus Safety on Valentine’s Day

Dear Parent(s) and Student(s),

We wish to remind you of changes we made last year concerning bus transportation and Valentine’s Day.  Because of safety issues, we will regulate the size of an item/Valentine’s Day gift that can be taken on the bus.  Items that are large in size or cause visual interference will not be allowed on buses.  Items such as balloons and large oversized stuffed animals are examples of things/gifts that will not be allowed on the bus.

We in no way wish to discourage you from sending Valentine’s Day gifts to school, but it is important that we keep students safe while at school and while riding the bus.  You are more than welcome to send balloons, overstuffed items, etc. but be sure to plan to pick your child up from school on that day.  If an item is sent that is not allowed on the bus, we will keep the item/s at the school and you can pick up during school hours of the following school day.

Thank you so much for helping us keep our students and drivers safe!

WCMS Special Guest Speaker - Sal Mullgrav of Homeland Security

Special guest speaker, Sal Mullgrav with Homeland Security and a U.S. Marine shared his personal story of success with the 8th grade students at WCMS. Mr. Mullgrav spoke of the challenges that he faced in childhood such as poverty and lack of parental role models.  On the street since 11 years old, he chose not to steal, drink, smoke, do drugs, or join a gang despite intense peer pressure. Instead, Mr. Mullgrav chose to work an honest job to support himself.  He lived on the streets and with various people that would take him in.  He put himself through college with student loans, hard work, and dedication.

His inspiring message to the students was that accomplishing any goal is possible by staying focused, making good choices, and never giving up no matter the circumstances you face.

(Mr. Mullgrav is pictured with his friend, Mr. Jacque Walker, 7th Grade Assistant Principal at WCMS.)

WCHS Demonstration to Help Teens Arrive Safe & Alive

Worth County High School is committed to helping teen drivers stay safe and alive!  In conjunction with Celebrate My Drive, a national program dedicated to keeping teen drivers safe and alive, Worth County High School held a First Responders Presentation on October 23, 2014 for the students presented by local government agencies.

The three-car crash reenactment involving two fatalities and injuries started around 8:45 AM that morning with two emergency transport helicopters also participating.

A car was donated by Futrill Auto Parts of Poulan in which the students took turns pounding it with a sledgehammer for a week.  As students witnessed the first responders in action, they were able to compare their "sledgehammer" car to an actual car from an accident to demonstrate the impact of car crashes.

WCPS Outdoor Classroom Receives Kiwanis Grant

A grant sponsored by the Georgia Kiwanis Foundation and matched by the Sylvester Kiwanis Club awarded to the Worth County Primary School's Outdoor Classroom has been completed. The $3000 grant was spearheaded by Ridley Monk of the local club and Tommy Gay of the Georgia Kiwanis Foundation.

Permanent galvanized lawn edging was installed around the Musical Playscape, Butterfly Garden, and gazebo. Additionally, students removed the old wood edging from the For the Birds garden, filled in the holes with topsoil, and installed decorative edging around the bird area and the gazebo. Statuary and student-sized tools and gloves were also purchased with the grant monies.

A surprise matching donation of $3000 from an anonymous Kiwanis Club member allowed the school to purchase eight high-quality 32 gallon trash receptacles that were placed around the school.

This project continues the Sylvester Kiwanis' history of support to the WCPS Outdoor Classroom and furthers the goals and ideals of Kiwanis – service to children.
