Guidelines for Attendance and Absences

Consistent and regular attendance and punctuality are considered essential requirements for all positions in the school district. All employees are required to follow the work calendar established by the Worth County Board of Education. Employees may take leave only in accordance with any leave policy enacted by the board. While even the most conscientious employee occasionally finds it necessary to miss work, unnecessary absences are to be avoided and may be used as grounds for discipline up to dismissal. Principals, department heads and immediate supervisors are expected to monitor their employees’ attendance and take appropriate action when attendance problems occur.

Leave is permitted only as specified in board policy and subsequent procedures. It is in the best interest of the students and the educational process that all personnel be present at their assigned duty stations for each scheduled work day. Employees are warned that falsifying information on leave reports, including claiming personal disability or illness when no such disability or illness exists, constitutes fraud and may be used as grounds for disciplinary action up to termination. Additional information is available in the board policy.

Sick leave days will be available to all employees on their first day of work. Employees hired to begin work after the start of the new school year will also have their days prorated based on their start date (rounded to the nearest quarter day).  Employees who exceed their allotted sick leave during the school year will have their excess leave days deducted from their pay in the most recent pay period(s) that they are absent.  Deductions will not be spread over the remaining pay periods except where appropriate to cover health insurance payments.  Employees who leave the district (separate from service) during the school year will have their available sick leave days prorated based on the actual number of days worked in the school year.  All unused sick leave shall be accumulated from one fiscal year to the next up to a maximum of sixty (60) days.
